Shreyas Iyer, the new skipper of the Kolkata Knight Rider in IPL 2022, mentioned that there have been several conversations with the management and players. The conversations were about figuring out the path ahead in his new role at the franchise.
KKR purchased Iyer for a record price of 12.25 in the IPL mega auction and made him the new skipper of the franchise. When asked about the captaincy and the brand of cricket for KKR, he was quite clear in his mind.
Comment by Iyer’s on KKR this season
New Skipper said that he has played KKR from outside and they have been an aggressive and fearless team. You need to align with their mindset and he believes that he has that mindset. He wishes to play with the same level of intensity that KKR always plays with. Iyer’s wishes that the team would go out there on the field and express themselves without any fear. He said that is the mindset that he would like to focus more on.
KKR opening partnership before Shreyas Iyer‘s
KKR had an aggressive opening pair last year with the partnership of Shubhman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer. It was one of those brilliant decisions by KKR that made Venkatesh Iyer score 370 runs in just 10 matches at 41.11. However, with Alex hales opting out this year, Venkatesh will retain his spot at the top despite his role in India.
Shreyas Iyer himself is playing at no.5 for the national team although he said he would love to bat on No.3. Iyer is comfortable playing wherever the team needs him to play. He may have to push himself to the top order with Nitish Rana in the squad.

He said that you cannot basically portray yourself as an anchor and it can change anytime. He said that he can be a power hitter on a given day and play an anchor on another day. These roles come with how the situation calls for one to perform. Shreyas Iyer said that he would love to bat in the no.3 position personally and has been batting at that position for very long. However, he mentioned that he is flexible to bat wherever his team needs him to play. He is comfortable with that and he is ready to explore whatever comes in the way.
