RR vs MI: The big picture
RR vs MI: The Mumbai Indians are on the verge of statistical humiliation. They’ve never experienced more than eight losses in a single IPL season. Despite their reputation for being poor starts, they’ve won five championships and have never lost more than eight games in a single season. They’re already there with six games to go this time.
Despite the fact that they’re all but out of contention for a top-four finish, they’re just one loss away from equaling the longest losing streak by any club in an IPL season. They first face Rajasthan Royals, who arrive with three wins on the trot, in their bid to prevent both this sequence and a team record of ninth loss in a season.
Apart from their batting inconsistency, MI have death overs worries too, with Jaydev Unadkat having the worst economy rate in the death among the 32 bowlers with at least 25 overs in the phase between 16 and 20 of 12.17. Their overseas imports Tymal Mills and Daniel Sams have failed to contain runs too, which has been another area MI is falling short.
After their last loss against LSG, a disappointed Rohit Sharma said, “The season hasn’t gone the way we intended it to go, but such things happen.” They have a difficult mountain to climb in RR to win their first race, but they’d like to believe that the only path from here is up – even if it’s just for pride.
