Ramiz Raja, the Pakistan Cricket Board chief said that Pakistan Super League is planning to shift gears after taking inspiration from IPL. He thinks that this would lead them to generate larger revenues.
Raja said that it is time to elevate the concept of PSL and introduce the auction system rather than the ongoing draft system. The draft system has been in function since the inception of the league.
Statement by Ramiz Raja on PSL
When asked about the state of PSL as of now, Ramiz Raja replied saying that they need to create new properties to be financially independent. He said that they are short on funds and all they have is the PSL and ICC funds. He also mentioned that they are planning to shift from the drafting model.
He said that the market forces are favorable, but will need to sit with the franchise owners to discuss it. He did not forget to mention that it is a game of money. Their respect will only rise when the cricket economy grows in Pakistan.
However, we are yet to witness how the Pakistan Super League franchise owners react to Raja’s ambitious vision. PSL up till now has been following the draft system. This allows a franchise with the weaker financial capability to assemble a squad with almost equal strength as others.
