Australian GP: Despite their car problems, Lewis Hamilton praised George Russell’s driving and Mercedes’ triumph at the Australian GP as “fantastic.”
Mercedes, who have yet to deliver car updates, were still behind Ferrari and Red Bull in Melbourne, but the world champions took advantage of their rivals’ mistakes, just as they did in the season opener.
Mercedes climbed the order after a double DNF for Red Bull in Bahrain, then a dismal weekend for Carlos Sainz and another retirement for Max Verstappen in Australia handed the Silver Arrows a podium, this time with George Russell ahead of Hamilton.
Australian GP: Hamilton’s statement on the race and the winners
It’s an incredible outcome for them as a team, Hamilton remarked after finishing fourth.
He also added that they haven’t improved the car necessarily in these three days, he also believes that they have extracted the most they could have pointwise. He is satisfied with the result of this race.
Hamilton stays in the fifth position after the Australian GP and is now 34 points behind the runaway race winner Charles Leclerc.
George Russell, the new young teammate of Lewis Hamilton secured the second position pointwise ahead of Lewis Hamilton at Albert Park after pitting under a safety car.
Lewis Hamilton, though he congratulated the winners, was largely unhappy about losing his position and made it clear through the team radio in the closing laps saying that it was Mercedes who put him in this difficult position.
He added to the statement by saying that he couldn’t fight for the third position because the engine was suffering from overheating, so he had to back off.

Australian GP: Hamilton is optimistic about the title race

Lewis Hamilton decides to remain optimistic despite Ferrari and Leclerc’s big title leads. Monegasque is still half a minute ahead of Hamilton despite two safety cars on Sunday.
He said that there are still 20 races to go and if you think from a realistic point of view, the way the sport is developing, the top teams generally develop at a similar rate.
He is really hoping to get back in the title race with the new car and everything. He believes that both his rivals, Ferrari and Red Bull will make the similar steps that his team is planning to take. Therefore the race against the title will not be seamless for Hamilton. The gap among the elite racers is pretty big and there is a long way for them to go.
Australian GP: George Russell proud after first Merc podium

Mercedes secured big points than their rivals in Melbourne both rivals, who each had a car that did not finish the race.
Russell claimed his first Mercedes podium and his second F1 podium after the half-point fiasco of Belgium last year.
He stated that it doesn’t matter how fast your car is if you don’t make it to the end and you are not there to pick up the pieces.
