The Royal Challengers Bangalore named Faf du Plessis as their new captain for the IPL 2022 on Saturday. The announcement happened during the unboxing even of the RCB in Bengaluru. Faf du Plessis was a part of Chennai Super Kings till the last season. He got picked up by RCB for 7 crores at the IPL 2022 mega auction last month.
The speculations revolved around with Virat Kohli ended with the announcement. He stepped down as the captain at the end of the season.
Players along with Faf du Plessis as captain contenders
Apart from Faf du Plessis, the Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell and India’s Dinesh Karthik was in the race. he put them behind and won the race though they were strong contenders.
It must have been his experience leading South Africa that got him the part. However, both Maxwell and Karthik are well-experienced in their area of expertise.
Virat Kohli’s statement on Faf du Plessis named as captain
Virat Kohli in a statement said that he had played a lot of IPL cricket and he is well aware of how the tournament works. Therefore he said he would completely rely heavily on the domestic experience and also on overseas players.
He said that they have got one of the great leaders in the game.
Faf du Plessis’ reply to Virat Kohli’s statement
Du Plessis replied to Kohli’s statement on him being the new captain. He said that it is a huge honor and privilege for him to be a part of such a big franchise. The memories lies in his head beautifully. Those memories really inspired him to be very excited for the upcoming IPL season.
He said that he really hopes in putting up a great performance for the fans.
The leader in Faf du Plessis
He has led the Proteas team in 115 International appearances. The country won 81 games out of those appearances. SA won 25 of the 40 T20Is played under du Plessis.
Faf du Plessis gave up the South Africa captaincy in February 2020. RCB valued him so much and gave him charge of a revamped side.
Later, Faf du Plessis took over the captaincy of South Africa on the Test side. This later got extended to all formats a year later.
He served Chennai Super Kings with so much grace scoring over 1000 runs in IPL 2020 and 2021 combined.
