RCB vs RR: The Big Picture
The Wankhede has been the outlier in this edition of the IPL, which has already seen a number of high-scoring games. The pacers struck in the powerplay with as many as 13 wickets at an average of 17.85, resulting in an average first-innings score of just 142 in three games. When the Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore meet at the venue on Tuesday (April 5), both teams will rely on their pacers to get them off to a good start, especially with both sides having top-heavy batting lineups.
The inability of Glenn Maxwell to play continues to be a problem for RCB’s balance. He’s not just useful in countering RR’s spin in the middle overs, but his off-spin would’ve been crucial against RR’s left-handers. In Maxwell’s absence, RCB’s senior batsmen will be tasked with facing RR’s spin duo, although neither has a track record to speak of, with the exception of Virat Kohli.
In the first two games, RR’s spin duo has been a handful. In their combined 16 overs, R Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal had taken six wickets at little over a run per ball. The difference between an extra 20-30 runs for RCB depends on how they handle the spin twins.
