The Board of Control for Cricket in India has made an announcement regarding the IPL 2022 format on Friday. The announcement said that the 10 IPL franchises will split into two groups of five teams each. The 10 teams will play 14 matches each in the league (7 home matches and 7 away matches). Each team will play five teams twice and the remaining four teams only once.
To make sure that the plan goes well, the 10 teams of IPL 2022 are split into two groups of five. The process of splitting has been done on the basis of a seeding system that is determined by the number of IPL titles and the number of final appearances.
The Group divisions
Group A | Group B |
Mumbai Indians | Chennai Super Kings |
Kolkata Knight Riders | Sunrisers Hyderabad |
Royals | Royal Challengers Bangalore |
Delhi Capitals | Punjab Kings |
Lucknow Super Giants | Gujarat Titans |

Each franchise will play twice against the teams in their respective groups. Therefore, each team will then play only once with the remaining four teams in the other group.
The IPL 2022 format is similar to the format of the 2011 IPL edition. Similarly, a case of two additional franchises occurred in 2011.
BCCI has also confirmed that the IPL 2022 will take place on March 26 and wind up on May 29. 70 league matches are set to commence across four venues in Mumbai and Pune.
Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium will witness 4 matches that each team will play. However, the franchises will play 3 matches at Brabourne Stadium (CCI) and MCA International Stadium in Pune.
